The short answer
Sign in to your child's Epic Games account at epicgames.com, open Parental Controls, and create a 6-digit PIN. Set Epic Voice Chat Permission and Epic Text Chat Permission, turn on the text-chat mature-language filter, enable Require a PIN to Add Friends, gate purchases, choose a maximum island rating, and configure Time Limit Controls and weekly reports.
Step 1: Open Epic Parental Controls and set a PIN
Controls follow your child's Epic account, so they apply on every device they play Fortnite on — console, PC or phone. Kids under 13 get a restricted ("cabined") account by default until a parent gives consent.
- Sign in to the child's Epic account. On a browser, go to epicgames.com, sign in with your child's Epic account, and open Account → Parental Controls. (You can also open it in Fortnite from the main menu → Settings → Parental Controls.)
- Verify your email. Confirm the parent email Epic sends to you, so Epic knows the account has a verified parent.
- Create a 6-digit PIN. Create a PIN your child doesn't know. Every change to these settings needs the PIN.
Tip: Use a PIN that's not a birthday or the console passcode, and enter it out of sight.
Step 2: Lock down voice and text chat
- Set Epic Voice Chat Permission. Choose Everybody; Friends, Team Members & Connections; Friends Only; or Nobody. For younger kids, Nobody or Friends Only is safest. Accounts for children under 10 cannot be set above Friends Only.
- Set Epic Text Chat Permission. Choose from the same four levels: Everybody; Friends, Team Members & Connections; Friends Only; or Nobody. Under-10 accounts cannot be set above Friends Only.
- Turn on the mature-language filter. Turn on Filter Mature Language to filter mature language in text chat. It does not filter what other players say in voice chat.
Step 3: Control friend requests
- Turn on Require a PIN to Add Friends. Enable Require a PIN to Add Friends so your 6-digit parental-controls PIN is needed before your child can send or accept an Epic friend request.
- Review existing connections. Go through the existing Epic friends list together and remove accounts your child does not recognize in real life.
Step 4: Stop surprise V-Bucks spending
- Require the PIN for purchases. Turn on the setting that requires your PIN for real-money purchases in Fortnite and the Epic Games Store.
- Remove saved cards. In the Epic account's Payment Management, remove any saved payment method you don't want used.
- Lock the console or phone store too. V-Bucks bought on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iPhone or Android go through that store, so also set spending limits there (see Step 6).
Tip: V-Bucks come out of whichever store your child plays on — an Epic PIN alone won't stop a PlayStation Store purchase.
Step 5: Turn on playtime reports and limits
- Turn on weekly playtime reports. Turn on Weekly Playtime Reports to get an email showing how long your child played each day.
- Set Time Limit Controls. Set a daily playtime limit and allowed play windows, then choose whether your child can request more time. Fortnite warns them 30 minutes before time runs out, then locks play until the next allowed window.
- Set separate Fortnite and UEFN limits. Review the separate time controls for playing Fortnite and for creating in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN)/Creative, and set each one appropriately.
- Cap island ratings. Set the Maximum Content Rating to Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, or Mature. Islands above the selected rating are blocked.
- Control publishing. Use the separate setting that controls whether your child can publish islands they create.
Step 6: Add console and device controls
- PlayStation. Use PS5 family management for play time, spending limits and communication. See our PS5 guide.
- Nintendo Switch. Use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for play-time limits and communication restrictions. See our Switch guide.
- Xbox. Use the Xbox Family Settings app for screen time, spending and who your child can chat with.
- Phones and tablets. Use Screen Time on iPhone or Google Family Link on Android to approve the app and cap time.
What age is Fortnite OK for?
Fortnite is rated Teen (T) by the ESRB for Lyrics, Suggestive Themes, and Violence, but the bigger risks for kids are open voice chat with strangers and in-game spending. Under-13 accounts start restricted under the US COPPA rules until a parent consents.
Common Sense Media rates Fortnite for ages 13+. Many families allow it younger with chat locked down and a parent nearby.

Frequently asked questions
Do Fortnite parental controls work on every device?
Epic's controls follow your child's Epic account, so they apply wherever they sign in. Platform-store purchase controls may still need to be set separately on the console or phone.
How do I stop my child buying V-Bucks?
Require your PIN for account purchases in Epic Parental Controls, remove saved cards, and require approval or authentication in the console or phone store your child uses. Fortnite does not provide a dollar-cap slider for V-Bucks.
Can I turn off voice chat completely?
Yes. Set Epic Voice Chat Permission to Nobody. You can also turn off chat in your console's own communication settings.
Does Fortnite have a daily hard time limit?
Yes. Time Limit Controls let you set daily playtime, allowed play windows, and whether your child can request more time. They get a 30-minute warning, then play locks until the next allowed window.
What if I forget the Epic parental PIN?
Use the reset option in Parental Controls; Epic sends a reset link to the verified parent email.
Are Fortnite parental controls free?
Yes. They're built into every Epic Games account at no cost.
