Is Telegram safe for kids? The short answer

No — Telegram is one to keep off children's devices. Its huge public channels, minimal moderation and lack of parental controls make the risks much harder to contain.

The short answer: Telegram is one to keep off kids' devices. Behind ordinary chats sit huge, searchable public channels with minimal moderation, a long-standing reputation for serious illegal content, and no parental controls. Its minimum age is 16 (18 in the EU) with no real age check, and Australia's eSafety has taken enforcement action over its handling of terror and CSAM. It's one of the apps predators are known to gravitate towards, alongside Discord.

What Telegram is

A messaging app — 1:1 chats, group chats, very large public channels and groups, file sharing, bots, and optional end-to-end encrypted "secret chats". The 1:1 messages are ordinary; the public, searchable side is where the risk sits.

The real risks

  • Minimal moderation in huge open spaces. Public channels can have hundreds of thousands of members and almost no oversight.
  • Reputation for serious illegal content. Moderation has improved since the founder's 2024 arrest, but historically it lagged badly — eSafety has taken formal enforcement action over delays around terror and child sexual abuse transparency.
  • Stranger contact and a thin trail. Secret chats can be set to delete after a set time, leaving little for a parent to see if something goes wrong.

So what age is it OK?

Telegram's own minimum is 16 (18 in the EU), the App Store rates it 18+, and there's no real age check at signup. It's a clear "not yet" for kids. Telegram is not currently on Australia's under-16 social-media ban list — but that doesn't make it a good fit for kids.
